The Emotional Recession

The real crisis today is not a lack of information—it is a lack of emotional understanding.”

For years, we treated Emotional Intelligence (EI) as a “nice-to-have”—the soft, fuzzy cousin of technical expertise. But as we navigate 2026, the data tells a different story. In a world where AI can draft our emails, code our apps, and analyse our spreadsheets in seconds, the only thing it can’t do is feel. This has turned EI into the most critical “hard skill” of our time. However, there is a quiet crisis brewing beneath the surface.

The Global “Emotional Recession”

While we are more connected than ever digitally, we are becoming emotionally bankrupt. Recent global data shows that for the fourth year in a row, our collective EQ scores have dropped by about 5.5%. We are living through what experts call an “Emotional Recession.”

India’s Story: A Tale of Two Generations

In India, the emotional landscape is marked by a stark, heart-breaking divide. We are a nation known for deep-rooted family values, yet our youth are facing an unprecedented emotional struggle.

  • The 18–34 Struggle: According to the Global Mind Health 2025 report, young Indians have a “Mind Health” score of just 33, placing them among the most emotionally distressed youth globally (60th out of 84 nations).
  • The Wisdom Gap: Compare this to the 55+ generation in India, whose scores sit at a robust 96. Our elders are functioning with a level of emotional resilience that the younger generation is finding hard to replicate in the age of “hyper-comparison” on social media.
  • The Workplace Heat: In Indian offices, daily anger levels are among the highest in South Asia (34%). Yet, when a leader leads with empathy, productivity in Indian teams jumps by nearly 35%. We don’t need more bosses; we need more “human” leaders.

Here is why EQ is the only way forward:

  1. AI can’t build trust: AI can give you the right answer, but it can’t sit with you in a difficult moment. Trust is built in the gaps—the small, empathetic gestures that machines can’t simulate.
  1. The “Emotional Salary”: In India’s competitive job market, people are no longer staying just for the pay check. They are staying for the “Emotional Salary”—a culture where they feel seen, heard, and respected.
  1. Conflict is the New Constant: In a hybrid world, misunderstandings are inevitable. High EQ is the “social lubricant” that prevents a misplaced Slack message from turning into a week-long cold war.

The data is clear: we are losing our emotional grip just as we need it most. Whether you are a student in Bengaluru or a manager in Mumbai, your ability to understand yourself and others is no longer a “soft skill”—it is your shield and your superpower.
